ABOUT RACK2CLOUD

FIELD-TESTED INFRASTRUCTURE ARCHITECTURE. BUILT FOR ENGINEERS WHO OPERATE AT SCALE.

Rack2Cloud is a technical architecture resource for infrastructure engineers and architects operating at enterprise scale. Every post, tool, and guide published here is produced by a single author with over 25 years of hands-on enterprise infrastructure delivery — across hyperconverged architecture, multi-cloud strategy, Kubernetes operations, data protection, and modern infrastructure engineering.

This is not a media site. There are no contributing writers, no sponsored posts, and no content produced to fill a publishing calendar. Everything here exists because it reflects a real architecture problem, a real failure mode, or a real decision that engineers face in production environments.

The Problem This Site Solves

Enterprise infrastructure has never been more complex or more consequential to get wrong. Organizations are navigating forced platform migrations, Broadcom licensing pressure, Kubernetes adoption at scale, cloud repatriation economics, and AI infrastructure decisions — simultaneously, under budget constraints, with teams who were trained on platforms that are being retired.

The content that exists to help engineers through these transitions falls into predictable categories: vendor documentation that assumes a clean greenfield environment, tutorial content that covers the happy path and stops at the first edge case, and opinion pieces written by people who have not operated the systems at the scale they are describing.

Rack2Cloud was built to fill the gap those categories leave — the architecture layer, where decisions have consequences, trade-offs are real, and failure modes are documented from direct production experience rather than theorized from a lab.

What Gets Published Here

The site covers five interconnected domains:

Virtualization Architecture — the VMware exit problem in full technical detail. Execution physics, controller resource contention, high-I/O cutover sequencing, policy translation, and upgrade mechanics. Built for architects running migrations under real constraints, not evaluating them in a proof of concept.

Cloud Strategy — workload placement decisions, cloud repatriation calculus, FinOps as an architectural constraint, and the infrastructure economics that determine whether a cloud strategy compounds value or compounds cost over time.

Kubernetes Operations — Day 2 operations and the failure loops that appear after deployment. Identity, compute, network, and storage loops. The operational layer that most Kubernetes content treats as out of scope.

Data Protection Architecture — backup fidelity, recovery metrics, immutable storage design, and the gap between DR that is configured and DR that actually works under failure.

Modern Infrastructure and IaC — Terraform and OpenTofu in production, infrastructure drift, sovereign infrastructure strategy, and AI infrastructure architecture for organizations bringing inference workloads into their own stack.

Across all five domains, the standard is the same: if it is published here, it has been validated against production-scale infrastructure. The architecture decisions, failure scenarios, and decision rules documented on this site are the ones that matter when systems have to keep running.

The Tools

Rack2Cloud publishes a suite of interactive architecture tools — migration advisors, cost estimators, configuration calculators, and infrastructure sizing utilities. These are working tools used in real evaluations, not demos. They are available at the Engineering Workbench.

The Author

Rack2Cloud is the work of a single infrastructure architect with over 25 years of enterprise delivery experience — spanning every major hypervisor, hyperconverged platform, public cloud, storage architecture, and data protection stack in production use today. The career arc runs from enterprise legal IT through national VAR solutions architecture to senior solutions engineering at a major HCI OEM — and into independent practice.

The full background, platform stack, and engagement model are on The Architect page.

Work With Me

A small number of advisory engagements are available for organizations working through infrastructure architecture decisions. VMware exit strategy, Kubernetes adoption architecture, cloud repatriation planning, independent architectural review — that is the work.

Details on engagement models are on the Work With Me page.

The Dispatch

The Dispatch is Rack2Cloud’s email publication — architecture guides, failure-mode analysis, and new content delivered directly. No algorithm. No feed. No noise.
